Calendar icon for booking the theory exam

Introduction

You are almost ready: the theory exam. But how do you actually book it? And which exam should you choose? In this article we explain step by step how to schedule your exam with the CBR and what the differences (and costs) are between the options.

Want to arrange it now? You can only book your exam through the official CBR website: Mijn CBR.

What do you need?

To book an exam you usually need a DigiD (the Dutch government login) with SMS verification or the DigiD app. Do not have one yet? Apply for it first, because without DigiD you cannot log in to Mijn CBR.

No DigiD?

Can you not get a DigiD? Then you can also use an application form. Note: this often takes longer, and afterwards you can no longer book an exam through Mijn CBR.

What does BTH theory exam mean at the CBR?

Many people wonder: what is a BTH theory exam and what does it mean? The abbreviation BTH simply stands for B-Theorie (the theory exam for the category B car licence). The CBR uses this code on your booking confirmation, invoice or invitation letter to show which type of exam you will take. Depending on the suffix (such as BTH-VE or BTH-I), it is a standard, extended or individual exam.

Which exam should I choose?

The CBR offers several types of car theory exam. Below are the options and costs for 2026 (note: in CBR communication you will see the different BTH abbreviations):

1. Car theory exam (BTH) - € 50.50

This is the standard exam. You get about 30 minutes for the continuous exam of 50 questions that count towards your result and 2 test questions that do not count. There are no separate sections any more.

2. Car theory exam with extra time (BTH-VE) - € 64.00

Do you need a little more time to read the questions? Then this exam is ideal. You get 15 minutes extra for the knowledge and insight parts.
Note: the questions are read aloud by a computer voice and you can use earphones.

3. Individual car theory exam (BTH-I) - € 118.50

Would you rather take the exam alone in a room with a staff member? This is meant for people who find group exams very difficult or are easily distracted. The content is the same, but the environment is quieter.

4. Car theory exam in English (BTH-E) - € 57.00

Do you speak English better than Dutch? Then choose the English exam. The questions are exactly the same as in the Dutch exam, but translated.

5. Car theory exam in English with extra time (BTH-E-VE) - € 70.50

Just like the Dutch version, but in English and with 15 minutes extra time.

6. Car theory exam with an interpreter (BTH-I-T) - € 118.50

Do you speak neither Dutch nor English? Then you can take an exam with an interpreter. Note: you must hire an official interpreter yourself who is approved by the CBR. The interpreter's costs come on top of the € 118.50 exam fee.

Note: the prices mentioned are based on the 2026 rates. Always check the current prices on the CBR website.

Tip: book in good time!

Waiting times at the CBR can sometimes build up. So do not wait until you have completely finished studying, but book your exam in advance. That gives you a clear goal to work towards! Also read our guide to the Dutch driving theory test in English.
