What is the CBR theory exam?

The CBR (Centraal Bureau Rijvaardigheidsbewijzen) is the Dutch authority that runs all driving exams. The car theory exam is a single continuous exam on a computer at a CBR exam centre. It tests three things:

Questions include multiple choice, hotspot questions (click the right spot in a picture), drag-and-drop questions and short videos. Newer topics such as driver assistance systems (ADAS), like adaptive cruise control and lane assist, are part of the exam too.

How to book the exam

  1. Make sure you have a DigiD (the Dutch government login). You need it to book.
  2. Log in at the CBR website (Mijn CBR) and choose the car theory exam (B).
  3. Pick an exam centre, a date and a time, and pay online.
  4. Bring a valid ID to the exam. You get your result straight after the exam.

You can take the theory exam from the age of 16. A pass is valid for 1.5 years; you need to pass the practical test within that time. For the current languages offered and the rules for interpreters or extra time, check the CBR website before booking, as these options can change.

The topics that cost the most points

Priority (right of way)

The Netherlands has many equal intersections without signs, where traffic from the right goes first, including cyclists. Trams have priority on such intersections, even from the left. Read our Dutch guide on priority rules or practise them in the free practice exam.

Cyclists

Bikes are everywhere. When you turn right, cyclists going straight on the same road go first. Check your mirror and the blind spot every time.

Traffic signs and road markings

Learn the shapes first: red circles forbid, blue circles command, triangles warn and blue squares inform. Our traffic signs database explains every sign in English, and you can test yourself with the traffic signs quiz.

Motorways and matrix signs

Above many motorways you will see electronic matrix signs. A red cross means the lane is closed, a speed in a red circle is a mandatory limit, and a speed without a red circle is only advice.

Speed limits

Unless signs say otherwise: 50 km/h in built-up areas, 80 km/h outside built-up areas, 100 km/h on main roads (autoweg) and up to 130 km/h on motorways, where most motorways have a 100 km/h limit during the day (6:00 to 19:00).

Study plan: pass in 2 to 3 weeks

  1. Week 1: work through the theory course chapter by chapter. Start with priority, signs and speed limits.
  2. Week 2: do a practice exam every day and read the explanation for every mistake.
  3. Week 3: only book the real exam once you pass your practice exams with a margin, without mistakes on priority questions.

The Zielaan theory course is fully available in English, with an interactive route map and CBR-style practice exams. You can try chapter 1 for free.
