ADAS driver assistance systems in the CBR theory exam

📢 Official CBR guidelines for ADAS (Rijprocedure B)

The CBR bases its theory questions on driver assistance systems on three official pillars from the Rijprocedure B:

  • The Introduction of Rijprocedure B: principles of independent, defensive and eco-conscious driving with technology.
  • Chapter 1: vehicle control and operating driver assistance systems before and during the drive.
  • Chapter 2: traffic behaviour, interaction with other road users and the right responses when a system reaches its limits.

What exactly is ADAS?

ADAS stands for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (rijhulpsystemen in Dutch). These are electronic systems in modern cars that support the driver in observing, deciding and steering.

The aim of ADAS is to improve road safety, reduce road deaths and encourage fuel-efficient driving (known in the Netherlands as Het Nieuwe Rijden).

⚠️ The most important CBR rule about ADAS:

As the driver, you always remain 100% legally and practically responsible. ADAS systems are aids and never replace your own observation, reactions or decisions.

The 7 Most Important ADAS Systems in the Exam

1. Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)

Unlike standard Cruise Control (which only keeps a fixed speed), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) uses radar and cameras to measure the distance to the vehicle in front.

  • How it works: does the vehicle in front brake? Then your car slows down automatically to keep a safe following distance. When the vehicle in front speeds up again, your car accelerates up to the set maximum speed.
  • CBR exam tip: in heavy rain, snow, dirt on the sensors or sharp bends, ACC can be less reliable. You must always be able to intervene immediately with the brake or accelerator.

2. Lane Keeping Assist (LKA) & Lane Departure Warning (LDW)

Two systems that help prevent you from unintentionally drifting out of your lane:

  • Lane Departure Warning (LDW): only gives a warning signal (a beep, vibration in the steering wheel or a dashboard symbol) when you cross the lane markings without indicating.
  • Lane Keeping Assist (LKA): actively steers to keep the vehicle neatly between the lane markings.
  • CBR exam tip: always use your indicator before changing lanes. If you do not, LKA will push back on the steering wheel!

3. Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB)

AEB detects approaching danger (such as a car braking suddenly, a pedestrian or a cyclist) and intervenes when a collision is imminent.

  • How it works: it first gives a Forward Collision Warning (FCW) with an audible and visual alarm. If the driver does not respond in time, the system performs an emergency stop by itself.
  • CBR exam tip: never rely on automatic emergency braking to brake at the last moment. You must always brake hard yourself straight away when there is danger.

4. Blind Spot Detection (Blind Spot Information System / BLIS)

Sensors on the side and rear of the car monitor the vehicle's blind spots.

  • How it works: a warning light in or near the door mirror lights up as soon as there is a vehicle in your blind spot.
  • CBR exam tip: a common exam mistake: "Can I change lanes if the light is off?" Answer: No! You must always check your interior mirror, door mirror and look over your shoulder first.

5. Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR)

A camera behind the windscreen scans traffic signs along the road and shows the current speed limit or overtaking ban on your dashboard or head-up display.

  • CBR exam tip: temporary signs (for example at roadworks, or matrix signs above the motorway) are sometimes missed by the camera. The actual signs along and above the road always take priority.

6. Drowsiness Detection (Driver Alertness)

The system analyses your steering behaviour, driving time and eye movements. If your steering pattern differs from normal, a coffee cup symbol appears on the dashboard with a sound signal.

  • CBR exam tip: what is the right action after a drowsiness warning? Stop at the next safe car park or service area straight away and rest for at least 15–20 minutes. Opening a window or turning up the radio is not a safe solution.

7. Reversing Camera & Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)

Helps when reversing into and out of parking spaces with poor visibility.

  • How it works: RCTA warns of crossing traffic (cyclists, pedestrians, cars) approaching from the side while you are reversing.
  • CBR exam tip: during the special manoeuvres keep looking all around you, and do not only look at the camera screen.

Dashboard Symbols & Colour Codes: What Do They Mean?

The CBR theory exam regularly asks about dashboard symbols. Remember the universal traffic light colour code:

  • 🔵 Blue / 🟢 Green: the system is active and working properly (e.g. high beam on, cruise control active). No action needed.
  • 🟡 Yellow / Orange: warning or fault. A system is switched off, a sensor is dirty or action is needed soon (e.g. low tyre pressure, ABS fault, ESP switched off). Drive on safely to a place where it can be checked.
  • 🔴 Red: acute danger or serious fault! Stop immediately in a safe place and switch off the engine (e.g. brake system fault, oil pressure too low, engine temperature too high).

Summary: The 3 Golden ADAS Rules for Your Exam

  1. 1. You are and remain 100% responsible: never blindly trust cameras or sensors.
  2. 2. Always keep looking actively yourself: blind spot lights and parking cameras never replace your interior mirror, door mirror and shoulder check.
  3. 3. Switch systems off in extreme weather: snow, heavy rain or black ice can block sensors or cause incorrect braking interventions.
